What sound system, lasers ,lighting and big screen projectors do i need?

I am surprised by the majority of the comments here by “happy” users of this model without any trouble with the short life span of the lamp I have experienced

This is amazing product with cinema theatre experience and good quality of the picture quality. This plays the quality picture right out of the box before you get into technical aspect of settings of it. We just watched 3 movies so far but will comment more once I explore other settings and results.
It is the quietest projector I have owned. Its difficult to hear the fan noise. I use a Chief Universal Mount which I purchased from Amazon. I use a 1 1/2 inch threaded pipe to connect the Chief Mount to an existing arm bracket.

This projector was a great deal, especially compared to the in-store price at Best Buy. It’s pretty big though, but for the image quality and price that’s not a big deal. It may not be the brightest during the day time, but it still is acceptable to watch.

I had a chance to test this projector as I was in the market for an HD projector. The image quality is excellent as is the black levels. The fan noise is minimal and it’s bright.

I just got this projector to replace my aging Sanyo PLV-Z1. The 8350 represents a very nice upgrade in resolution, light output, and contrast at a price less than what the Z1 cost me eight years ago.

This projector cost about 1/2 of what the other Epson projector we found in the store, and the only difference we can see is that this one is white, not black. It works great.

I just hooked it up and I am suprised and completely blown away at the quality of the picture. I upgraded from a 6-year Epson Projector that still worked fine but needed to go. The crisp, bright, and sharp picture is amazing. The contrast settings bring out the blackest of black levels that the other projector just could not display. The lens-shift feature is something not to overlook because it allows you to place it in virtually any position without sacrificing picture quality. I compared this to the Mitsubishi HC4000 and went with this Epson due to the placement flexibility of the lens-shift and have zero regrets.

The noise level is perfect zero and sometimes we may fear, for a moment, whether the Projector is working or not. I am using this in India , but with a voltage converter from 220 to 110. I have inquired with the technical department of Epson, they have clarified that it will work on 220 volts as it has a voltage detection system in built. But I have not dared to use at 220 volts. There is no mention of input AC power

I wanted to have a NATIVE 1080P RESOLUTION which I do not regret and would not get a projector with lower resolution. One may notice that a projectors specs say they can do 1080 but this is misleading as this is not NATIVE resolution, meaning they try to upconvert to a 1080i (i=interpolated) and it is not the same thing, not even close. I want to see blu rays in their full resolution which this does. One may also purchase an A/V receiver to upconvert the source material for best picture quality, my Blu Ray player also does this upconversion, but it is still not a true 1080P. While not as good as the 1080P one will see when playing a Blu Ray disc for example, the picture from HD cable channel which is 720P is still AMAZING just as good as the picture on my 42 inch LCD HDTV and better than my older 55 inch rear projection HDTV. High Def video from a home video source such as full 1080P from an AVCHD format camcorder for example is stunning and home movies look as good or better than store bought if done properly. The input source is of course going to dictate how good the picture is, so it will look as good as the source input, this is not always the case with all projectors, they have to have the capacity to project the image at full input resolution such as this one. Most projectors that have this resolution cost more and a flat panel in the screen sizes this is capable of are going to be many thousands of dollars more.

I want to start up a dance events in venues that can take 600 people . I know very little about the kind of kit i would need and don’t want it looking and sounding cheap. I have between £10,000 and £20,000 to spend. What do i need and is this enough cash ? It have to be portable .

Hi, Gold Digger,

I’m in the USA, but I’ll try to help you (I’ll use the American $ , but I’ll try to do a basic conversion at the end.)

The venue differs based on size of the venue itself (floor space and design.) If it’s a square room / hall with high ceilings, you can make due with a few (2-5) kWatts of sound. If there’s a weird design and you have to pump out to each nook, you might have to add more speakers at a lower wattage. You’re looking to spend about $ 3000 for 6-8 speakers, depending on the configuration, plus another $ 1500 on amps, and another $ 1000 on cables and “road gear” (like portable rack units, etc…) That’s about $ 5500 for audio.

Lighting can be simple or very complex. Depending on the venue, you can spend $ 1500 for a very sophisticated show [with maybe 6 lights,] or you can spend $ 10000 and have a gaudy-as-hell production. Let’s say lights will cost about $ 5000, with trusses, cables, and controllers costing another $ 2500. That’s about $ 7500 for lights.

Lasers are interesting. If they are featured as an effect (ie: behind the DJ,) you might be able to get away with only having one, and spending $ 200 on it. Add a smoke machine / fogger, and the whole thing costs $ 300. On the other hand, if you want to go crazy, you can easily spend $ 100,000 or more for a “white” laser and beam splitter that will handle things like animation, etc. Let’s say you go with something a bit more simple, and spend $ 2000 on lasers.

Projectors can also get costly. If it’s a small venue, dark, and cozy, you can get away with a $ 1500 home theater projector. If the venue has a flat white wall, you don’t even need a screen. If, on the other hand, your’re outside, or the screen needs to be a few dozen meters tall, you’ll likely need a professional or industrial projector. Those can cost upwards of $ 10000 each. Ideally, you might try two 6000 lumen projectors at $ 6000 each, and no screens (or screens made of bolts of white fabric [Silver Lycra / Spandex acrually works incredibly well for this] that you make yourself on a wood / PVC frame that cost almost nothing.) That would be $ 12000.

So, let’s say you go with the audio configuration I mentioned, that’s $ 5500, Lights are $ 7500, $ 2000 for lasers, and $ 12000 for video projectors, you’re looking at $ 27000 American. That’s about £17000. Well within your price range.

Factor in more for a video SOURCE (ie: DVD player, cabling, distribution amplifiers, etc…) and you’re still well within your limits. You can add or remove more “effects” as you see fit.

For example, you can get more speakers at lower watts for a better sound quality. Or, you could add more lighting or laser effects. You may also want to stock up on replacement bulbs for the projectors (which aren’t cheap, by the way.)

Hope that helps!

Q&A: Items for a "Wet Show"?

In comes this nice 1080p projector that is rated #1 on Amazon’s Top 10 1080p projectors.

You no longer need the budget of Steven Spielberg to equip a home cinema with crystal sharp projected images. This machine, out of the box, delivers excellent quality 1080p motion picture images. At a throw of about 10 feet, you can fill an eight-foot wide screen. Darken the room and lower the bulb’s output to save on it’s expected life and you will swear you are watching a movie at the local multiplex (assuming you have Bluray and a modest sound system. This machine is well worth $ 4,000, but now available at around $ 1200, it’s worth every penny. Treat yourself.
If you are a home theater nut and have a budget

My daughters find that they cannot play some video games on it as standing blocks the projector. Not sure if a bigger room and a higher mount would take care of that or not. There is no remedy for it in our house.

I needed a projector with offset. This projector is great for locations where the ceiling is less than 8 ft high and the screen cannot be located directly in front of the projector. I have my theatre in a walk out basement that has 10 ft of full length windows and doors on the west side of the room and the screen on the east wall. I have a 105 inch painted screen (DIY Theatre Platinum Screen Kit available from Amazon vendor Parts Express). The basement is divided by a center wall with two six foot wide doorways that only partially block the light. During the day and evening the light level is very high, but this projector, set on economy mode and cinema provides an acceptible picture. At night, the picture is outstanding. I now have 100 hours on the bulb, and I can’t imagine watching a movie on my flat screen TV. Everyone who has seen the picture is amazed at the quality.

The picture on this projector is excellent, one of the best pictures I have seen for under $ 1800. Many times when I start it up even as new it has had a burning smell to it. Nothing is wrong with it but it does smell like it is burning.

When I first took out the projector from its package, my first thought was ‘Whoa, this is huge’. Appart from that, picture is great, and it is simple to setup. One thing to note though is that there is no way to adjuts the shape of the picture like there was with my old projector. Instead, you should make sure that the projector is perfectly leveled, and the manual calibration will automagically adjust the shape of the picture to get a perfect rectangle.

I have owned the 8350 since just after cyber Monday and have logged about 100 hrs on the lamp. I am very happy so far with the quality.

The picture and the contrast, resolutions is awesome. Cant believe that we get this quality at affordable prices, cheaper than even a regular 52″ TV.

A while back we decided to add some lighting effects to our stage show and thought of putting on a wet show. I went and found an old-school overhead projector on e-bay and set off across the ‘nets to find our how to run a show on one. One of the most useful pages i could find said to use liquified sugar candy in place of oil on account of it not mixing with water. The question, should i have to go to a specific place that specializes in items like this, or should my local grocer have it?

any additional info from anyone thats done this would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Red Hand

What dig. camera brand is good at capturing images displayed by an overhead projector?

I was using Dell DLP DLP 1210 projector earlier. It gave me good service. Till I receive this Epson 8350, I was impressed with my Dell projector. The only drawback was it did not have HDMI input. Now I have received this Epson projector and it has erased image of Dell DLP from my mind. Out of the box, I was amazed to see the size of this projector. It really exceeds your imagination Rather too big to handle. The picture quality is very nice and is maintained top level even if you start increasing the Image size. Even at 120″ x 120″

I have this hooked up to an Onkyo receiver via HDMI and I have a PS3, XBOX360 and a custom built media center pc all hooked up in the remaining HDMI inputs on the Onkyo receiver. I am displaying a 120 inch screen of 1080p magnificence that my previous projector couldn’t even come close to. I know there are other projectors out there that have an even bigger wow effect and besides this projector not being 3D capable there is nothing else wrong or discomforting about this unit. If you are in the market for a great projector at a great price this is the one for youtrust me you will not be sorry you did.

This projector exceeded our expectations in every way. And when you read on, you’ll see that we had pretty high expectations already. The picture from this projector is stunning. This is the best value in home theater running. There are plenty of 5 star reviews already, and everyone else pretty much summed it up before me. But they are all true. Here’s why:

I purchased the Epson Model 6100 in September of 2009, which as far as I can tell, is the predessor to this projector. I installed it in December of that year as it took some time to purchase and install a new screen, AV system, DVD, and the projector itself. Now 2.5 years later, after performing like a champ, I noticed a red bar across the bottom and a blue bar across the top of the screen. Called tech support today and was told that the problem was an LCD panel, and since it was out of warranty I had to take it 100 miles one way to an authorized Epson service center in Rockville, MD..
Mustang SC-E106D169 106-Inch Electric Screen

I debated and debated on replacing my aging Infocus X1 for my home theater. After reading about this and finally understanding the capabilities of “lens shift”, and getting a couple of AVS forum reports, I decided to give this a try, knowing Amazon is great about purchase mistakes.

When I play action video games, I use the manual zoom to make the picture smaller so that our heads don’t block the projection. Neither the zoom nor the lens shift need to be readjusted. Really convenient.

I slapped in my son’s 720p Winnie the Pooh movie and about once every 10-30 seconds, the screen became snowy white with static for a few seconds, and then it went away. Sometimes it would go snowy, then black for a few seconds and then it would catch up. Every time this happened, my 2-year old son would turn to me and say “Fix Daddy.” Which was followed closely with a sigh from myself.

I’ve tried every setting I can find with the receiver (and with my Sony BDP-CX7000ES Blu Ray player) to send the image to the projector in a 4:3 ratio, but haven’t been able to do so.

If you are on the fence between a TV or a projector and you have the room for a projector and the screen then get the projector – you will be glad you did. For the same money, you can more than double your screen size and really create a new experience in your home

We are projecting on a 120″ diagonal very reflective (but not the most reflective) pull-down screen. Our living room is bathed in evening sunlight. Prior to 30 minutes ago, we had to wait until sundown to watch movies. The MovieMate 72 couldn’t compete against the sun hitting the screen. But it looked great at night. At the magnification we used, you could see individual pixels but the picture was still pretty cool. Well, not anymore.

I cant spend more that $ 150. and I am taking a Bio class that is taught with slide shows containing the notes I need. I am disabled when it comes to multitasking. I can’t write and listen at the same time. I need a camera that will last me at least more than 2 years and has a good resolution and if I am investing that much for a camera I want it to have good features like flash (on/off), mute, very good at captivating far objects, good lighting for dark corridors or gloomy weather, and dependent on electricity and not on batteries. Thanks for your time in reading this info. and thanks in advance : )
Sorry I misused the word disabled. I just placed it as not being able to multitask. I already asked my professor and she said she was fine(to take pic. during class). I did not wanted to ask for her power point because I thought it would be too much. You are right however, I am going to ask tomorrow. Either way I had been thinking of buying a camera, that is why I added the rest of the details bc I don’t want it for school only.

Before you go out and buy a camera for this purpose, why don’t you talk to the professor and see if he or she could make the slides available online for the students via blackboard or l drive or whatever your school uses. If you have a documented learning disability it would be required for them to accomodate you in this manner. I’m not sure your professor would want the distraction of a student constantly snapping photos in class.

Can these projectors show from behind a screen?

I have mine ceiling mounted about 18′ from a 8.5′ diagonal screen in my basement. We watch FiOS movies, XBox and DVDs.

This projector produces an excellent picture quality. With a 13ft distance it can produce a 120″ diagonal picture.
I love it and recomend this projector to everyone

It is impossible for me to compare this projector with any but carry along business projectors (no comparison for video – this one is much better).
This projector produces an excellent picture quality. With a 13ft distance it can produce a 120″ diagonal picture.

I have a Motorola HD cable box hooked up to it and it gets a very good HD picture, but the sound was cutting out constantly through an HDMI cable connection. I worked around this by keeping the HDMI cable for video but running an optical audio cable from the box to the Samsung receiver and plugging the HDMI directly into the projector, instead of Box to receiver to projector as I had it before. This seems more like it may have been a problem with the cable box or receiver.

This has got the be the best projection, both quality and price. All you really need is a wall and you’re good to go. I found that using the white background gives you a more vibrant colors, but using a black or dark background gives you .. well, more “blacker” colors. For example, when watching ESPN, the black bottom bar will in fact be “matte black” on the black background, where the black becomes “glossy black” on the white background. They look excellent regardless of the color of the wall, so try it first then figure out what to do with the screen – paint or pull down.

I hope this helps in case anyone has a similar setup as my movie room and is thinking about buying this projector.

The HDMI Cable input may further improve the picture quality.

I bought this projector on a lightning deal on Amazon and was not ready for some upcoming expenses, so I thought I would write this part of my review for first time projector/home theater buyers, so they know what additional expenses to expect. Just remember, Amazon is a great place to get price references, just plan ahead when it comes to ordering wires and wire tracks and measure everything twice. Also,I love this projector, but if it catches on fire, I will buy Epson’s 3D model and pay the extra $ 200-300, not because this one is bad, but because I am now completely addicted to the home theater experience. This thing with a popcorn machine and surround sound systemit doesn’t get better.

Of course, another important point is the picture quality. I am no expert, but blacks are really black, the image is very clear, even on a 10ft wide screen, and the colors are very real. Another plus is being able to adjust size and inclination of the projected image with ease and with many options. 1080p is important not only for programs, but for the computer. I have the computer connected to it with wireless mouse and keyboard and it shines.

My boss is looking at 2 new wide screen projectors, both InFocus brands. Do either the IN5106 or the IN5102 project from behind the screen?

Yes they indeed do have that capability (rear projection)

Of course you’ll need to look into rear-projection screens as well.

Most if not all of these projectors have rear-screen capability – a function of merely flipping the image to reverse. Set up functions work the same (geometry adjustments, etc.)
